“Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I. If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday. The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.” Isaiah 58:9-11

I attended a prayer service for a holiday where most people were fasting; one section of the service was to be prayed standing. The leader of the service looked out at those there, and said, “Many have been fasting, so do tend to your own needs; this is a long passage, sit as your need requires.”

As the service continued, these words stayed with me. “Tend to your own needs…as your need requires.” No question, no guilt, no wondering about what or when—just tend to your needs, we are here praying with you, join as you may.

Prayer:
As we place ourselves within the Lenten season, may we be ready to serve as need is ever present. Let us include our needs, without judgment of self or of those we serve. Let us satisfy what is needed and be comforted as we offer comfort. Amen
